History

David Hangar, a local native plant grower, convened a meeting of interested people in the Roman Catholic Church Hall in Ward St Indooroopilly on 16th May, 1972. Here the Western Suburbs Branch of Society for Growing Australian Plants was born, with David Hangar as Chairman and N. Keating as Secretary and Treasurer.

On 1st June 1982, Western Suburbs amalgamated with the nearby Oxley Branch of SGAP. For a time the Branch became known as Western Suburbs/Oxley Branch, but in 1990 it reverted to Brisbane Western Suburbs Branch.

In 1979 this Branch published a book (in loose-leaf and bound forms) called Perfumed and Aromatic Australian Plants, compiled and written by Ralph Bailey.

The flower of Stenocarpus sinuatus is featured as the Branch logo.

Activities

The Branch has continued to meet regularly since 1990.

Meetings usually consist of a short business discussion, followed by a presentation on a topic often given by a guest speaker.

Recent topics have included Botanical Art, discussion on influential botanists of Queensland, Ground orchids, Brisbane City Botanical Gardens, Myall Park, ‘Plants Flavours and Fragrances’, Wattles of the Western Suburbs and Spring Flowers.

After each presentation, we enjoy a supper, discuss the plants supplied for 'Show and Tell', and hold an exchange of plants donated by members. Members also willingly share knowledge and assist where possible. Occasional visits to local places of interest are arranged.

Members

Over the years, many members have occupied positions on the Qld Region Council, (as well as the national body, ANPSA), and continue to support Qld Region Activities such as the Autumn Plant Sale, the Spring Flower Show (photo), and Region meetings which are held at varying locations. Many members have been awarded Life Memberships of the Society in recognition of their contributions.

Individual members also follow ANPSA Study Group activities (according to their special interests). These include attendance at such as Garden Design, Fern, Grevillea Study Groups and Small Plant Interest Group meetings which are held in the Brisbane area, and activity by correspondence also occurs.

Projects

westernsuburbs Sherwood Arboretum 2019 1

As part of the 1988 Bicentenary Celebrations, members were given permission to plant a deep, overgrown gully in the Sherwood Arboretum, to transform it with a rainforest gully. Since that time it has grown into a wonderful forest. In conjunction with Friends of Sherwood Arboretum and the Brisbane City Council, an extension has been planted. To celebrate our interest, we have Breakfast in the Arboretum in early December each year.

We have supported the Brookfield Show Society since 1997 in the horticultural section, by staging a display, and donating a prize for the exhibit judged the Champion Native Flower of the show. It has been very interesting, since this time, to see the growth of exhibits in the native plant sections for the cut flower display.

We have hosted the Region Christmas meetings held at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens and the Branch also hosted the Region Autumn Gathering & AGM in March 2021 at the Sherwood Arboretum.

The 50th Birthday of the Brisbane Western Suburbs Branch will be celebrated in May 2022.

Please join us to learn more about and enjoy our wonderful native plants.

We welcome visitors to our branch meetings—you'll find we're a friendly group!
