Sunshine Coast

Meetings

We meet for 2-3 hours at 2pm on the second Sunday of each month except January, but there are often other events and propagation days between regular meetings. Many of our meetings are excursions to explore some of the beautiful natural places in our region, usually led by an expert in the flora of that location. For details of our upcoming program, see our website below.

Members

We offer the opportunity to get to know and appreciate Australian native plants, learn how to identify them, what their uses are, and learn and practise how to grow them, all in an environment of friends, fun and natural beauty. Members of any age and level of expertise are most welcome! Our membership covers a broad spectrum, from younger parents to older grandparents, and ranges from expert professional botanists and ecologists, to beginners who want to learn. Come along as a visitor, and see if you like us!

Projects

In addition to our monthly meetings, we currently have two propagation projects. One of these involves propagating and selling rare plants from the lifelong collection of one of our expert members, David Hockings. The other involves propagating rare plants from the Sunshine Coast region as an aid to conservation. Members are welcome to join one or more of these projects. We also conduct plants sales, and man an educational stall at Nambour Garden Expo each year.

History

In June 1984, an Affiliated Organization was formed in Nambour and was called Sunshine Coast Society for Growing Australian Plants. The inaugural President was Tony Bean with Ann Wardell as Secretary. In 1988, it became the Sunshine Coast Branch of SGAP. In 2002, the branch went into recess.

The branch was reactivated as the Sunshine Coast Branch at a meeting at Maleny in late 2007.

We welcome visitors to our branch meetings—you'll find we're a friendly group!
